A high grade steel of the carbon manganese type with addition of chromium and tungsten for improved wear resistance which is called as AISI (01) / OHNS steel is normally used for Punches. AISI (D2 ) and S7 steel also can be used for punches for compressing the abrasive and tough product respectively.
A combination of high carbon and high chromium that is AISI D3 (HCHC ) steel is better for maximum wear resistance is used for Dies.
